Well, it is and it isn’t. No spoilers here — at least nothing direct.
I watched Cloverfield last night and while to say that the conception of such a creature is awesome would be an understatement, the movie really wasn’t about the monster.
Surprisingly, it is a movie about people: the person who held the camera to [...]

LaTtEX meets and greets Kuyarazzi Bea Saw!
November 20th, 2007 · 1 Comment
I’m taking a break from the really serious topics I’ve tackled of late (okay, I admit, Sidney’s challenge on my last post is a difficult one!).
So some pics for now from last Saturday night’s pictures of Pinoy Big Brother Season 2 big winner Bea Saw’s birthday bash, where I finally stopped envying my sister:
Bea celebrated [...]

Have you ever been fired because of boredom?
I have, and I’m not proud of it, and that’s a story that I’d talk about some other day. But I can relate with these Japanese guys who have been reprimanded for contributing to Gundam’s wikipedia entry. 260 times. Using the Japanese ministry of agriculture’s computers.
Reminds me of [...]

Problems of context and the oversensitivity of the Desperate
October 3rd, 2007 · 27 Comments
This morning, Reynz and I were talking over GTalk about the Desperate Housewives brouhaha when the topic led me to ask about the Bikolano term “uragon”.
Over the comments at the blog post linked above, I saw her say something about being called “uragon” as an insult when I had the impression that it had a [...]

Scobelizer posted a video from Consumerist.com featuring the hellish experience of Delta Airline passengers who had to withstand the following:
7 hour flight delay
A quartet of crying babies
A staff that gives all kinds of excuses and lies
No food
No option to go back to the terminal and pick another flight

The only telenovela that I can stand watching is…
April 5th, 2007 · 2 Comments
ABS-CBN’s Maging Sino Ka Man.
Despite it still suffering from some of Filipino telenovela’s perennial flaws and traditional subplots, e.g., dragging extender episodes, a rich-vs-poor love story, overly-”evil” antagonists, amnesia, convenient deaths, and even a sudden and almost immediate recovery from two decades of nervous breakdown (thank God there’s no facelift subplot, at least not yet), [...]

Fourth Dreamgirl is Filipina
March 22nd, 2007 · 4 Comments
Last night Melynn and I were finally able to watch Dreamgirls.
When the part came where Effie White (Jennifer Hudson) was going to be replaced by Michelle Morris (Sharon Leal), Melynn noted that Sharon looked Filipina.
Well, IMDB confirms that Sharon Leal indeed is of Filipino and African-American descent.

The Da Vinci Code Controversy: A Maturing Christianity
May 15th, 2006 · 3 Comments
Manila Times columnist Rome Jorge, a colleague and good friend, wrote a wonderful editorial published on the Times last Sunday.
To quote:
At its finest, the Church embraces science and reason. It tolerates differences of opinion. It nurtures debate, criticism and reflection. It can even simply enjoy a book or a movie. Such sobriety comes with maturity.
The [...]
