Elite schools, success, and a child’s sense of self-worth
May 13th, 2008 · 26 Comments
A couple of weeks ago The New York Times came out with an article about “elite” Korean schools which groom their students to enter Ivy League universities.
Reading the following passage made me reminisce about my high school alma mater, which with its reputation and demanding curriculum, such stories are not unusual at all:
One graduate was [...]

Cebu Pacific’s monumental failure: A new online reservation system
April 20th, 2008 · 55 Comments
UPDATE: Due to the shortcomings of this initial post, I wrote a follow-up post entitled Cebu Pacific’s failure isn’t in the software, it’s on the phone.
Melynn, who operates I-NAV Travel & Tours, got pissed yesterday. She arrived at the Cebu Pacific ticketing office at 10 in the morning. By the time she was done, it [...]

Regretting EDSA Dos
January 19th, 2008 · 6 Comments
I clearly remember that morning, seven years ago from today, when our professors told us that we’re not required to attend classes.
We can get on the DLSU bus, which comes and goes every hour and a half, bringing students and teachers to La Salle Greenhills, from where we walked short of a kilometer to the [...]
Can just anyone rise up to the challenge of poverty?
January 10th, 2008 · 12 Comments
Around a month ago Sidney Snoeck (who maintains the excellent photo blog My Sari Sari Store) posed a challenge to my blog entry Mariannet Amper and the Gospel of Hopelessness.
In that blog entry, I posited that the “the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer” mantra was part of a “gospel of hopelessness” [...]

The god of realpolitik
September 25th, 2007 · 7 Comments
The news this past week amuses me, in the sense that it appears that god (or at least, as interpreted by man) in all forms and religions has been too getting too many headlines in different parts of the world for different reasons — enough perhaps for atheists to take notice. And be amused as [...]

Yet another scandal for La Salle
August 3rd, 2007 · 8 Comments
Back in 2002 former DLSU Green Archer Mike Cortez was accused of game-fixing after the Archers lost out to arch-rival Ateneo in Cortez’s worst game ever in the season. No evidence was ever found against him, and the game-fixing angle simply remained a rumor.
In UAAP Season 69 last year, the Green Archers were suspended after [...]
Talking to the deaf
March 22nd, 2007 · 6 Comments
Last Saturday, I gave a presentation at the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde entitled “Essential Software for Business.”
What made this talk special was that it was for students of CSB’s School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies, specifically those under the Business Entrepreneurship track. My partner (read: interpreter) for this presentation was [...]

CHEd’s Memorandum Order 49: Tutors to licensed degrees declared illegal
February 11th, 2007 · 18 Comments
An entry Bugsy posted on her blog about EO 566 and CHEd Memorandum Order 49 led me to the conclusion that CHEd, whether inadvertently or otherwise, has just made illegal the tutoring students of degrees which lead to professions regulated by the PRC.
While it does allow tutoring for individual subjects, once you establish any sort [...]
