…or at least put under martial law.
After yet another political assasination there, even after the elections are over, I can’t help but think: with the bulk of election violence coming from that province, hasn’t it had enough? It should be put under military rule. Or each and every politician there should be house-arrested/incommunicado during the run-up to the next campaign period to prevent them contacting their assassins and private armies.
Its politicians are the most vicious and spineless (dickless?) that I have ever heard of, and the lack of progress in that province only goes to show that all those deaths mean absolutely nothing.
The place has spilt enough blood. Abolish it now!

Ayos lang yun, Karlo. You shouldn’t worry about it until you’re in voting age!

as with so many other provinces in the philippines, i suppose. but that’s democracy… unless the people living there take it upon themselves to correct it… no amount of “outside” influence can.
still… i must ask this: are you absolutely, positively sure, you want pGMA to have martial law powers?

Over just Abra, yes. But over the whole country? Hell no.
Thing is Abra is deteriorating faster than the rest of the country. Private armies abound there, assassins roam free, and everybody knows who had who killed but nothing is being done about it. Something drastic has to be done for that province, lest its rottenness spread to the rest of the country.
We already have enough problems, we don’t need Abra’s problem to spread.

And abolishing it as a province would do what exactly? It’s very unfortunate. I actually found out that my friend was actually related to the congressman who was assassinated.
dissolving Abra and combining it with another province would simply make the problem worse.Genocide, anyone?

well, i don’t think its going to spread… it has been like that over there since… that of course doesn’t excuse it being bad.
Are you absolutely, positively sure, you want pGMA to get a taste of martial law powers?
) …you do realize that one taste may be all that is needed… if you can do it there…
i’m sure there are other options to consider first before going through that route… besides it will take an act of congress to declare martial law… i forget what happens though if congress is not in session… if the president can do that.
i don’t think it will spread. though other parts of the country are just as bad. just look at masbate.
or some of those places in mindanao.
are we just more aware now because of extensive media coverage and because we’re more linked together via the interweb? or are we simply deteriorating?

benj,
Abolishing it would take out the government offices and positions that these warlords are fighting over. Plain and simple.
cocoy,
I think we’re not deteriorating. I would like to believe that in the old days the whole country *was* actually alot like Abra. But private armies gradually became out-of-fashion, but Abra refused to budge.
My alarm is not actually because of the election-related violence but, remember that feature in the news where they found “assassin academies” in Abra? How about the murder of that congressman here in Manila… he’s from Abra right? Abran politics can bring its violence to Manila… it can bring its violence elsewhere.
We don’t need that kind of backwardness now, lest Abra become some sort of killing fields. Something has to be done… if not martial law, fine, but something HAS to be done.

fair point jon.
never did see that assassin academy on tv. now that you’ve mentioned it… it kinda reminds me of what is happening in africa… child soldiers. best guerrilla weapon, even better than suicide bombers.
i wonder how much those guys who’ve graduated from the assassin academy cost to be hired? 10k? i wonder how much they charge for bodyguard services or assassinations?
perhaps it is a lucrative venture.
if we have schools that hire out mercenaries… then something is seriously wrong with our culture.
yep, indeed… i agree. something must be done to stem the violence and done really quickly.
