An Honest Question

December 20th, 2006 · 8 Comments

I have a question for anyone who cares to answer:

If Daniel Smith weren’t handsome and baby-faced, or more importantly, if he were black, would our perception of the rape case be different? Would we think that he really raped ‘Nicole’?

I’d like to hear your thoughts.

    You broke up already? :bawl:

    OF COURSE NOT!

Sira hindi ito tungkol sakin, this is about a friend of mine of broke up with her boyfriend

Nalungkot naman ako dun. Condolences as well on the passing of your Grandfather.

I hope your mother will be happy for her father is now with God.

Belated Merry Christmas (hindi na ako nakabati ng mga tao :( )and a Happy New Year!

Yeah, sad din ako kasi sort of unexpected yun sa lolo ko… anyway wala naman talagang expected death (unknown ang exact date and time of death to all of us).

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Pasensya na at hindi ako nakabati sayo. Naging busy kami sa lamay, sa mama ko, at sa marami pang bagay.

    Ingat lagi. :)

If he had been ugly or black or both, I’d say public perception would generally be apathetic. Except maybe for activists. Sure, the wannabe political analysts in all of us would pop up from time to time spilling our two cents worth on anybody who’d listen but I think the majority would be content to watch the lawyers, the politicians and the everybody else actually involved to fight it out on TV.

I’m more intrigued how different it would be if Nicole had been fair, slender and beautiful. I think that’s gonna be way tougher to gauge.

Well, we don’t know what Nicole indeed looks like, but I guess Smith’s fans are probably envying her with thoughts of “sana ako na lang… papayag ako!”

If she had been svelte and fair and slender (as you posted on your blog), and if Smith were black or ugly or both, malamang all out support yang mga fans na yan kay Nicole.

Funny how people define ‘rape’ in their minds.

Come to think of it… I focused solely on Nicole and how humiliated, angry, depressed, abused she must have felt to have been treated like a pig. So I think that, for me, it really doesn’t matter if the alleged rapist is good looking or looks like he descended from Kingkong or if he’s black or white or Pinoy or American or Korean. A rape is a rape … a crime against chastity and, if you ask me, even if they hang Smith for this, it won’t change the fact that this thing has forever changed Nicole’s life and self-esteem (I hope not).

What I’m trying to underscore here is the disgusting mentality of many people for basing opinions on the shallower aspects of such cases. It’s so easy for many women to say that Daniel Smith couldn’t have done the crime because a) he’s white and b) he’s so cute.

    Makes me cringe.

well, a pretty good question of yours…… i was thinking about that too. in class, we,including my professor debates on this issue. well, one of my classmates can be considered one of those women who stands for smith bec.as you said,,,… handsome, cute, American, white—- just the type of guys my classmate wants. one more thing, he’s really “hot” daw..come to think of that.. if she was the judge, she’ll immediately dismiss the case without even considering that she too, is also a woman. she didn’t even thought of her fellow countrymen. one day, she’ll realize that not all hot men are goof guys! DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!!!
